When Christmastime comes, do you secretly groan inside? Maybe you don’t even try to mask the disappointment in the Season. No shame in either. According to Psychology Today, Healthline, and HCAMidwest, 38% or more of people feel an increase in stress – which impacts mood and motivation. The Holidays make things like anxiety and depression worse for 64% of people who already feel them. You are brave to admit how you feel (even if it’s only to yourself) and you have an opportunity to do something to help lift your spirits. 

Create an Advent Calendar for Yourself

  1. Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle.
  2. On the left side, list at the things you don’t like about the Holidays.
  3. On the right side, list what you can do about that situation to make it better align with your needs.
  4. Calendar the ideas you listed on the right side – scheduling at least 1 of those ideas a day for at least 12 days.

Example:

When you intentionally do something that meets your needs – you create something to look forward to each day. It’s like a mini-reward for enduring a Season you’d rather forego.

Additionally, as you engage in each self-selected activity, do it with the focus of honoring yourself or others with your actions. This purpose will take the same activity and super-charge it to allow for more joy than otherwise. For example, I might make grandma’s cookies every year and it doesn’t really lift my spirits, but when I make them with the intention of honoring her and sharing her gift with others, I feel my spirits lifted. I may still feel the loss of her, but I feel the love and joy she brought much more.
