WellBEing Wins w/ Debbey Woodruff: How to Control Emotional Holiday Eating.

How to Control Emotional Holiday Eating
How to Control Emotional Holiday Eating

If you find yourself reaching for the sweets this time of year, you’re not alone! Between Halloween candy and Holiday treats, it’s easy to grab a goodie on the go! Not only do those delectable delights taste good, but they temporarily soothe frazzled nerves and provides comfort.

No shame. It works! But, the effects wear off quickly and you eat more to sustain the effect.

If you don’t want to eat sugar as your relaxation technique, there is a different approach that yields more long-lasting results.

I AM Yoga Nidra

I AM Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation technique that helps reduce emotional eating. This Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) technique addresses the different parts of your being to relax you physically, mentally, and emotionally. When practiced daily, within 8 weeks it begins to bring changes to the brain’s neuropathways and chemical flow, decreasing stress hormones and increasing a sense of wellBEing (University of Michigan Health System (2013): 73% displayed reduction in avoidance symptoms and meaningful improvement compared to 33% in treatment as usual).

 How does it work?

  1. It progressively deeply relaxes every part of your being from the densest aspect (your physical body) to the most ethereal (your spiritual “self”)
    1. Physical – Your Body
    2. Energy – Your Emotional “Headspace”
    3. Mental – Your Busy Brain, Intellect
    4. Intuition – Your Intellect + Subconscious Wisdom
    5. Spiritual – Your Connection to What’s Real/True, Beyond Time
  2. Your brain waves mimic sleep so the mind is calmer, emotions are subdued, and the body feels less tension.
  3. In this state you are aren’t trying to control, brace/hold tension, and force as much. The autonomic parasympathetic nervous system is able to freely release the chemicals and processes that help heal/repair where it’s needed.
  4. Because you are still conscious, in this state you can suggest the focus of the repair by using an intention or listening to the affirmations in the Yoga Nidra.  With resistance gone, over time with consistent practice, the words living in your subconscious begin to naturally reverberate throughout – without effort or tying.
  5. It brings you to a state of BEing. From this state, you are less reactive and more intentional, better able to handle life’s stressors and thus, less likely to emotionally eat.

Protocol:

Start each day with an I AM Yoga Nidra (~ 30 minutes). Couple it with regular exercise afterwards for double the benefits.
