Small Business Knowledge Network w/ Jim Vogel – Networking is Simple and Free

Small Business Navigator w/Jim Vogel

Recently on CBS News, the top executive of the biggest networking company in the US was interviewed about networking and building professional relationships. Many of you reading this belong to one of his franchise locations. He discussed the “V” formations and the “U” formations as you assess the room early in the event setting. As he continued, often in complicated ways, thoughts for this blog became set.

That’s because the only formation that is important in networking is the “P” formation:  people. It is people who meet introduce, and begin to discuss mutual interests. It is that simple. Business networking does not have to be intimidating, time-consuming, or expensive.  For small business owners, especially those just starting, the idea of building relationships can seem overwhelming. Yet it is not. Just have the right mindset because networking is both simple and rewarding.

Start by focusing on genuine connections rather than collecting business cards. Attend local events, join online groups, or participate in industry-specific gatherings where relationships are likely to be built. Do not be afraid to introduce yourself and ask questions; people appreciate authenticity and curiosity.

Social media is your ally. Platforms like LinkedIn, X, and Facebook are powerful tools for connecting with others in your field. Share valuable content, comment on posts, and engage in conversations. This builds your credibility and keeps you visible without the need for constant face-to-face meetings.

Remember, networking is a two-way street. Offer help, share resources, or make introductions when you can. The more you give, the more you will receive in return. Even a simple follow-up message after meeting someone can set you apart and lay the foundation for a lasting professional relationship.

Finally, be patient. Building a strong network takes time, but with consistent effort and a genuine approach, you will find that opportunities start to come your way naturally. Please keep it simple, stay authentic, and watch your business connections grow.
