Dear Dr. Margi,

We have had our furniture for years and lived in our house for years.  I am bored and want some change but can’t afford to buy all new furniture.  I love Christmas because we move our furniture around to look at the tree. After Christmas, I was told I should put my furniture back to view the fireplace. What are your thoughts?  — Frustrated Ellen!!!

Dear Ellen,

A room can have many focal points. A Fireplace, Window with a View, TV, Wall unit, Piano and or a Wall Grouping of Art. It is how your furniture is grouped that shows off your focal point in a room.

Buy your furniture with 2 plans in mind

I have always done 2 floor plans for my clients before they purchase their furniture. A Summer plan and a Winter plan.

In the Summer, a “Window with a View” is perfect. If you don’t have that, in this case the piano could be the focal point. Or a picture grouping. In the Winter, your fireplace or Christmas tree could be the focal point.

Rearranging for change gives you new energy

I have found that when you rearrange for change, you give the space a new energy and it is enjoyed in new ways. The rule in our house is “I change the furniture around when my husband is not home.” My advice to you if you do this — always leave the lights on when he comes home. Give him a text or leave a note so he doesn’t fall over a sofa!

My advice when couples are buying furniture are:

Buy pieces

That will give you that flexibility to rearrange for change. Sofas or love-seats instead of  a sectional. Tub chairs or wing chairs in place of a recliner.

Create a floor plan — Here’s how

Do a floor plan to make sure the pieces you are buying will be easy to move around.

The best way to make a plan is through a floor plan — a road map to creating your new living space that fits your needs and goals. It gives you an accurate use of space you will be working within. Use graph paper – each square is = to 1/4”. Draw your plan to scale, with each square representing one foot.

Winter floor plan, the fireplace is the focal point.

Include

Any and all architectural features such as doors, fireplace, windows and radiators.  Once you have your use of space established, you can select which pieces of furniture you need. Every room should be arranged to suit your needs and be as individual as the people who live there. A dining room does not have to be used as such, if it can be put to a better use, do it.

In your floor plan, place an x where you need lighting. Color with a crayon or pencil the colors you are thinking of using. This way you can see the color flow and balance.

Summer floor plan, the window is the focal point.

Have fun and enjoy the process. It is a journey and should reflect who you are. Where you have been. What you love!
