Have you heard of The Emerald Necklace? The town of Cornelius is close to finishing a 13-mile paved greenway system that will connect some of our most popular residential and commercial areas in the Lake Norman area.
Imagine being able to walk or bike from the Northcross Shopping Center to Bailey Rd Park, immersed in nature and riding past wetlands. From there, connect to Plum Creek Park on the edge of Davidson, and continue on the greenway crossing beautiful bridges until arriving at Antiquity, where you can enjoy a stop and a photo at the iconic wooden bridge. Then it’s on to Magnolia Plaza (Jetton Rd/Catawba Ave area), where you can hop on another section of the greenway and ride through forests until you ultimately end at Birkdale. Enjoy a little shopping or lunch before connecting back to Northcross.
This network of greenways and shared use paths will connect neighborhoods and give residents an enjoyable place to get out in nature and be active. Maybe you can even run an errand or two by bike and save a little gas while avoiding traffic on some of our busier roads. The project is already over 75% complete with the remaining sections expected to be finished by 2027.
