Mike has been in the healthcare community for over 30 years. First as a certified nursing assistant and then moving on to become a registered nurse.. He started working at Novant Health in 1999. He soon became a Clinical Coordinator, House Supervisor, Nurse Manager, and Director of Nursing.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to be on The Lake Norman Advisory Council, to Support Families, Patients team members of Novant Health, Huntersville Medical Center. My Nonprofit, Little Smiles wanted to help the new Martin Truex Foundation, Emergency Ward. They have added to our mission: Working through the nurses, to get the kids what they need while in the Hospital. To put a Huge Smile on Sweet Little Faces.
Every child that enters the doors of the emergency ward, receives a gift bag with appropriate aged toys. It helps take the edge off of entering a hospital. Siblings get one as well.
Mike brought it to our attention that medical professionals can experience a“Burn out.” During the middle of Covid, the medical professionals witnessed 30, 40 and 50 year old parents with small children dying. It was impossible not to be totally involved and react to it.
Some patients blamed the medical professionals for not keeping them healthy. When we asked Mike what we could do to help the situation, he gave a simple answer. “Just Say Thank You”. We have forgotten our manners and respect for our medical professionals who are doing the best they can.
Wash your hands. Wear a mask while in public, and distance yourself from others. Nothing new, just common sense.
When should you go to the ER, Urgent Care or Your Physician?
Go to the ER if you feel you have broken a bone, having trouble breathing, or just became violently sick.
Go to Urgent Care if you need stitches or have a fever of 101 or above.
Go to your physician if you have been sick for a few days and know you need attention. If it is an emergency, they will just send you to the ER.
