WellBeing Wins w/Debbey Woodruff – How to Address Doubt: A Recipe for Real Change

How to Address Doubt - A Recipe for Real Change
How to Address Doubt - A Recipe for Real Change

A sinking feeling overwhelmed Karen as she stared at the clear digital scale in her cute, beach-styled
bathroom with pom-pom–fringed blue valences. She’d been working hard to shed 50 pounds. Yet
instead of leaving her to her skinny self, the weight clung on like a slug on a leaf.
“Ugh,” she thought, stepping onto the truth-teller once again. Would the couple of cookies she ate in
frustration show up? As the number stared back at her, Karen wondered if her efforts would ever pay
off. When results didn’t arrive in the way—or the timing—she expected, she lost faith.
It’s easy to lose faith when we don’t see progress in the areas we care about most: health, relationships,
careers, finances, even our mood. Especially when change takes longer than we want.
But there is hope. Try this recipe for staying the course:

  1. Track your effort.
Keep a written list of positive steps you’ve taken. Each night, pause to congratulate yourself for every
    choice—no matter how small.
  2. Set a daily intention.
While brushing your teeth in the morning, ask: What’s one thing I can do today to support the change I
    want?
  3. Write your own pep talk.
Create the encouragement you wish you’d hear when things feel uncertain. Keep it on your phone. Read
it—or better yet, say it out loud with compassion, especially in the mirror.
  4. Practice grace.
Change is a process. You’ll step back at times, but those setbacks grow fewer as your forward intention
    strengthens.
  5. Remember how change works.
Nature shifts even when it’s not obvious—seasons, plants, weather. Life has seasons, too. Recall times
you’ve persevered before, and others who’ve overcome challenges and reaped rewards.
  6. Trust cause and effect.
It’s impossible for things to stay the same when you’re doing something different. You reap what you
sow. Plant a pear tree, and pears will grow—not apples.
  7. Every step counts.
Each step toward what you want is a step away from what you don’t. Over time, the old norm fades and
    new habits take root.
  8. Adjust as needed.
If something isn’t working, evaluate what might help—new strategies, a mentor, or learning a missing
    skill.
  9. Reward progress.
Create a list of rewards and celebrate milestones along the way.
  10. Surround yourself with inspiration.
Post uplifting quotes or images where you’ll see them—on your walls or your phone.

I know this recipe works. I spent 30 years trying to “heal” something in my own life. While I made efforts forward, it wasn’t until I committed consistently that the breakthrough finally came.
Transformation can be challenging, but it’s rarely impossible. If you want lasting change, I believe you
can experience it, too.
