- The Financial Advantage
“Hidden Treasures” are not always found in “brick and mortar” stores. Sometimes shoppers can find true “treasures” at BARGAIN prices at local YARD SALES (also called Garage Sales.)
During the cold winter months, people often utilize their indoor time by cleaning out closets, attics and garages in hopes of purging items they have outgrown and/or do not use in order to make way for NEW THINGS. This is a win/win for everyone because bargain shoppers can find amazing deals at a fraction of the cost of new items bought in stores — and – sellers can make a little money in the process — plus — clean the house.

Believe it or not, there is actually a history regarding WHY Americans have garage/yard sales. Originally this tradition was called “rummage” sales. It began in the early 1800s when shipyards put unclaimed cargo on the docks and sold the items at discount prices. People came to the sales in hopes of finding things at bargain prices for their families and/or businesses.
With the passing of years, organizations and churches copied this concept by asking for donations of clothing, furniture and home décor so they could host “rummage sales” in order to make money.
After World War II, families left big city living in cramped apartments to go in search of the new phenomenon – suburban life. Communities popped up all over America. Couples who dreamed of raising a family somewhere between rural life on a farm and urban living in a metropolitan area fell in love with an entirely new concept – Suburbia. Affordable single family homes in charming neighborhoods — many with attached garages — lined the streets.
Keep in mind that running parallel with the migration to the suburbs and the subsequent “Baby Boom” (after all of the soldiers came home from World War II) is the aftermath of the “count your pennies” mentality during The Great Depression.
Many of this generation of adults had lived in poverty throughout their youth; however, The Depression Era was over and people had more “disposable income.” Ironically, they still had the mentality “don’t waste money” or throw away anything that is still usable and/or productive but the ever growing “Middle Class” Americans (who grew up in during The Depression) now had “extra money” to purchase all of the new products on the store shelves – thus – the economy exploded and the 1950s were considered “happy days” in America.
All of these factors inspired families and neighborhoods to adopt the “rummage sale” mentality and adjust it to their own personal needs. As neighborhoods grew and architecture of houses changed in the exploding communities all across America – garages were added to homes. Presto – the term “Garage Sale” was “born.” Originally, these sales were held in individual garages. This allowed the seller to set up the “treasures” they wanted to sell and open their garage door for business whenever they wanted to market their items.
. . . the tradition continued and has remained popular. To date, Americans host between 6.5 to 9 million yard sales/garage sales per year. However . . .why spend money on gas to travel all over the county to small yard sales when you can go to ONE NEIGHBORHOOD and find it ALL.

Don’t let rain or chilly weather keep you away! YARD SALES are a fabulous way to spend a Saturday. Join the FUN on Saturday, March 16th at The Harbour – in Mooresville!
