Hello,
I’m Shonda, the face and mind behind Happy Decluttering & Organizing. Before becoming a professional organizer, I spent nearly 15 years in healthcare, working in various roles in hospitals and doctors’ offices. While it was a rewarding career, the demands of the job eventually took a toll on me, both physically and emotionally. Deciding to leave healthcare was difficult, as I still felt a strong desire to help people in meaningful ways, especially through challenging times.
It took nearly a year of searching before I discovered organizing, a career that allows me to support others while also putting my natural skills to use. Growing up in a family were holding onto belongings was common, I saw firsthand how possessions can sometimes overwhelm and take control of a space. I don’t love the word “hoarding,” but the reality of that environment taught me how to navigate belongings in ways that add order and ease to life.
In January 2023, I launched Happy Decluttering & Organizing, fulfilling my mission to help people who feel burdened by their belongings. After interning as an assistant organizer for eight months, I gained hands-on experience that taught me how to create tailored solutions for clients with different needs and challenges. Since then, I’ve continued growing my business and team, aiming to support clients as they turn their homes into welcoming, functional spaces.
Starting the decluttering process can feel like a huge task for many. Sentimental items often make it especially hard to let go. But ultimately, it’s about keeping what truly serves a purpose in your life. By letting go of items you no longer need or use, you open up space to focus on the present rather than being tied to the past.
Clutter can drain your energy and add unnecessary stress. Think about how much time you’ve spent searching for items that seem to vanish in the mess. In a recent survey, nearly half of participants shared that clutter in their homes increased their stress levels. Another significant portion admitted that the clutter left them feeling embarrassed. In more severe cases, clutter can contribute to feelings of overwhelm or even depression, especially when an accumulation of belongings goes beyond just “stuff.” For those dealing with serious hoarding, there may also be risks to both mental and physical health, as dust, mold, and other hazards can build up. A cluttered home can even increase the risk of fire hazards.
