WellBeing Wins w/ Debbey Woodruff – Emotional Goblins: Don’t Let Them Spook You

Emotional Goblins -
Emotional Goblins -

Janelle just finished a strong run of back-to-back events over the course of a week. They were successful, and the feedback was positive. Yet, emotional goblins began to haunt her. They filled Janelle’s dreams and caused her head to pound. For days, they lurked in the corners of her mind, leaving her tense and irritable.

Do you ever notice that when you’re feeling “off,” everything seems to go “wrong”?

Janelle was faced with the same choice each of us has when emotional goblins appear.

Two Options:

  1. She could resent, resist, or ruminate on the ghosts—seeing them as harmful, feeling afraid, and trying to avoid them. This ultimately feeds the ghost energy and allows it to control actions, vocal tones, thoughts, and choices.
    OR
  2. She could see the emotional goblins as friendly—noticing them with curiosity and approaching them with openness to better understand why they showed up.

These emotional ghosts hold the secrets to the source of our moods—what determines the texture of life’s flow, what makes our energy bright or low, and what dictates our sleep patterns. They are friendly goblins if we take the time to get to know them. They hold our deepest longings and needs. They show us when our experiences and desires aren’t aligned—in the form of physical, mental, and emotional discomfort. And if we take the time to tune in, they will tell us what they need to disappear.

How to View Your Ghosts as Friendly:

  1. Janelle found a good stopping place in her schedule and paused to listen.
  2. She offered gratitude for her body’s signals.
  3. Janelle soothed her mind—the ghost’s graveyard—through meditation or prayer.
  4. Then Janelle began to directly question the feelings and sensations to understand their purpose.
    • Tip: By asking the sensation what it’s about and what it wants you to know, you access your intuition—your inner wisdom.
  1. After asking questions like “How did you come to be?” “What do you need?” and “What do you want me to know?”, it became clear: Janelle was more emotionally depleted than she realized.
  2. She sensed that the emotional support she needed was simple—speaking affirmations and giving herself a hug.

The ghosts left. Janelle felt centered once again.
